Okonomiyaki in Hiroshima, Okonomimura and oysters
Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is built in layers on the griddle: a thin batter, a pile of cabbage and toppings, then a bed of fried noodles. The best-known place to try it is Okonomimura in Shintenchi, with 23 restaurants on three floors, a few minutes' walk from Hatchobori tram stop. Oysters are the other local food, eaten mainly in winter.

Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki is layered, not mixed. The cook spreads a thin batter on the hot plate, piles cabbage and toppings on top, then turns it onto a bed of fried noodles. The best-known place to eat it is Okonomimura in Shintenchi: 23 restaurants on the second to fourth floors of one building, about 3 minutes’ walk from Hatchobori tram stop. Each restaurant keeps its own hours.
This page describes the places. It does not rank restaurants, and we have no favourites to push.
How Hiroshima okonomiyaki differs from Osaka’s
Japan’s national tourism organisation (JNTO) puts the difference simply: Hiroshima style is “not mixed but layered, and also includes noodles”.
| Hiroshima style | Kansai (Osaka) style | |
|---|---|---|
| Batter | Thin layer, cooked first | Cabbage, flour and egg mixed together |
| Cabbage and toppings | Piled on the batter | Mixed into the batter |
| Noodles | Yes, fried underneath | No |
| Noodle choice | Soba (yellow noodles) or udon |
At Okonomimura and similar places you sit at a counter by the griddle and watch it being built. When you order, say which noodles you want.
Okonomimura
Details below are from Hiroshima’s official tourism site, dive-hiroshima.com, checked October 2026.
| Address | 5-13 Shintenchi, Naka-ku, Hiroshima |
| Floors | 2nd to 4th floors of the Shintenchi Plaza building |
| Restaurants | 23 okonomiyaki restaurants |
| Hours and closing days | Set by each restaurant |
| Tram | Hatchobori stop, about 3 minutes’ walk |
| Bus | Hiroshima Bus Center, about 12 minutes’ walk |
Okonomimura’s history starts with street food. After the war, about 50 okonomiyaki stalls gathered in Shintenchi Square. In 1963 the square became a park and the stalls had to move, so a two-storey prefabricated building called “Okonomi-mura” went up in front of it. The current building was completed in 1992.
Other guides give 25 or more restaurants, so treat 23 as the latest official count rather than a fixed number. Either way, expect more than 20 counters to choose from.
Shintenchi is near Hatchobori, a few tram stops east of the Atomic Bomb Dome, so it is easy to reach for dinner after a day in the Peace Memorial Park.
Okonomiyaki near Hiroshima Station
If you are short of time or arriving by train, Hiroshima Okonomi Monogatari Ekimae Hiroba is a group of okonomiyaki restaurants on the sixth floor of the Hiroshima Full Focus Building, a few minutes’ walk from the station’s south exit. The city’s tourism site says staff there also teach the basics of grilling your own. Its website is ekimae-hiroba.jp.
Okonomimura or Ekimae Hiroba
Both are groups of small okonomiyaki restaurants under one roof, so the choice is mostly about where you are that evening.
| Okonomimura | Ekimae Hiroba | |
|---|---|---|
| Area | Shintenchi, near Hatchobori and Hondori | Opposite Hiroshima Station’s south exit |
| Floors | 2nd to 4th | 6th floor of the Full Focus Building |
| Restaurants | 23 (official tourism site) | Several; check ekimae-hiroba.jp |
| Getting there | Hatchobori tram stop, about 3 minutes | A few minutes on foot from the station |
| Suits | Dinner after the Peace Park or a stay near Hondori | Arrival or departure by train, station-area hotels |
If you are staying near the station, our guide to where to stay in Hiroshima compares the station area with the Peace Park and Hondori side.
Learning to make it
The cooking class picked above meets by the fountain next to the Atomic Bomb Dome and goes by tram to a local restaurant, where a chef shows you how to layer the okonomiyaki yourself. It offers vegetarian and gluten-free options. The second tour below is an evening food walk around Hondori and Nagarekawa with stops at three standing bars, for guests aged 13 and over.
Several day tours also include an okonomiyaki lunch, such as the Hiroshima and Miyajima day tours.
Hiroshima oysters
Hiroshima Prefecture grows more than half of Japan’s farmed oysters and ranks first in the country, according to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. They are a winter food: the city’s tourism site says they are shipped from October to May.
Two winter events are built around them:
| Event | Usual timing | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Miyajima Oyster Festival | Second weekend of February, 10:00 to 15:00, in front of Miyajima pier | The 2026 festival was cancelled because of poor oyster growth |
| Hiroshima Castle Oyster Festival | Last Saturday and Sunday of February | In the castle grounds |
On Miyajima, the half-day guided walk listed on our Miyajima page includes a grilled oyster on the way. In okonomiyaki restaurants, ask at the counter whether oysters are available as a topping in season.
Fitting it into a day
The Peace Memorial Museum is busiest from 11:00 to 15:00, so a late lunch or an early dinner in Shintenchi fits around a morning visit. For the rest of the city, see things to do in Hiroshima.
