Osaka to Hiroshima by Shinkansen, and as a day trip
From Shin-Osaka, a Nozomi Shinkansen reaches Hiroshima in about 1 hour 21 to 1 hour 26 minutes for 10,950 yen, or 10,750 yen on smartEX. Japan Rail Pass holders ride Sakura or Hikari trains free, or add a 4,170 yen Nozomi ticket. A day trip from Osaka works for the Dome, park and museum.

From Osaka to Hiroshima, take a Nozomi Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka. It takes about 1 hour 21 to 1 hour 26 minutes and costs 10,950 yen for a reserved seat, or 10,750 yen on smartEX. With a Japan Rail Pass, ride a Sakura or Hikari at no extra cost, or add a 4,170 yen special ticket for the Nozomi. A day trip from Osaka is realistic if you keep it to the Atomic Bomb Dome, the Peace Memorial Park and the museum.

Checked October 2026. One adult, reserved ordinary seat, regular season, from Shin-Osaka, using the official smartEX table dated 1 April 2025 (smartEX fares, PDF). The counter price is the smartEX price plus 200 yen (smartEX). Off-peak dates take 200 yen off a reserved seat; peak dates add 200 yen and the busiest dates 400 yen.
Journey time
Ekitan’s timetables show the Nozomi between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima at 1 hour 21 to 1 hour 26 minutes. We could not confirm the figure on a JR page. Sakura and Hikari trains stop more often, so check the exact train you plan to catch.
Shin-Osaka is one stop from Osaka Station on JR lines. Allow time for that leg if you are staying in Umeda, Namba or near Osaka Castle.
With a Japan Rail Pass
The Japan Rail Pass covers Sakura and Hikari trains, which run between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima, so pass holders need no extra ticket. The pass does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho trains unless you buy the Nozomi and Mizuho special ticket. From Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima that costs 4,170 yen for adults, half for children, for any seat class (price list, PDF). It goes on sale a month before travel.
For a single return to Hiroshima the national pass is poor value: 21,900 yen of Nozomi tickets against 50,000 yen for the cheapest 7-day pass. It makes sense only as part of a longer trip around Japan.
A day trip from Osaka
A day trip from Osaka to Hiroshima works best with an early start and a short list. Here is a sample plan built on the 1 hour 25 minute Nozomi; check the actual departure times before you go:
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| About 7:45 | Nozomi from Shin-Osaka |
| About 9:10 | Arrive Hiroshima; tram 2 or 6 from the station’s 2nd floor |
| About 9:30 | Atomic Bomb Dome, Aioi Bridge and the hypocentre |
| 10:00 | Peace Memorial Park: Children’s Peace Monument, Cenotaph, Flame of Peace |
| 11:00 | Peace Memorial Museum (aim to enter before the 11:00 to 15:00 peak) |
| 13:00 | Lunch; okonomiyaki is the local dish |
| Afternoon | Shukkeien Garden or the Hiroshima Castle grounds, or rest by the river |
| Late afternoon | Tram back to the station, Nozomi to Osaka |
If the museum matters most, go straight there from the station and see the Dome afterwards. The museum’s busiest hours are 11:00 to 15:00, so arriving at 9:30 rather than 11:00 makes a real difference. Book a timed ticket if you will arrive in a busy season.
Adding Miyajima
Miyajima is well over an hour from the Peace Park by tram and ferry, or about 45 minutes on the World Heritage Route boat from beside the Dome. Fitting the museum and Miyajima into one day from Osaka means leaving early and returning late. If you want both, either stay one night in Hiroshima or take a guided day trip that handles the timing. Our Hiroshima to Miyajima guide has the routes.
Guided day trips from Osaka
Three tours on GetYourGuide start in Osaka. All three visit the Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima.
- Hiroshima Miyajima Bus Tour (H.I.S.): the best-known option, rated 4.7 from 1,271 reviews. It includes Shinkansen tickets from Osaka or Kyoto, or you can join in Hiroshima. The day includes about 30 minutes at the Dome, an hour in the museum, okonomiyaki lunch and Miyajima.
- Hiroshima and Miyajima Day Trip by Bullet Train (Amigo Tours Japan): rated 4.8 from 375 reviews, guided in Spanish and English. Miyajima comes first, then about two hours in the Peace Park in the afternoon. The listing marks the park stop “Extra fee”, which probably means museum entry; ask before you book.
- Hiroshima Tour on Luxury Vehicle (Travel Club Japan): a private van for up to six people from your Osaka, Kyoto or Hiroshima hotel, rated 4.9 from 130. The English speaker on board is a driver, not a licensed guide, so expect transport rather than commentary.

Getting from the station to the Dome
At Hiroshima Station, follow the tram signs to the 2nd floor of the station building, where trams have stopped since August 2025. Routes 2 and 6 go to Genbaku Dome-mae for a flat 240 yen, paid when you get off, by cash or IC card. Japan Rail Pass holders can take the meipuru-pu loop bus from the Shinkansen exit for free instead. Our getting there guide has the details.
Staying the night instead
If you can spare a night, the visit becomes calmer. You can enter the museum in the reserved 7:30 slot, walk through the park in the evening and keep the next morning for Miyajima. See where to stay in Hiroshima and our Hiroshima itinerary for a two-day plan.
